I have just read The English Ballet by W J Turner, first published 1944 which mentions this episode and prompted me to look into it further. Your interesting answer adds more but may I point out that the 1940 invasion in question was of the Netherlands not the Sudentenland in Czahioslovekca (which occured in 1938).
